Member of the Month January 2013

The nominations for the January Strider of the Month are:

ALI NASH

- Ali's been fighting his way back to fitness and form after a serious injury which has seen him out of action for over 4 months. Ali had some solid performances during January including 13th in the Silsden 3 miler as well as a strong result at the 3rd Peco race at Bramley Falls.

CHRIS REYNIER

- Although Chris now lives the other side of the world he still wears the Saltaire vest with pride and during January it helped him (along with his training!) to an impressive half marathon PB, knocking 10 minutes off in the process. Just for good measure Chris also notched up a 5k parkrun PB, something which he's helped to set up.

BARNEY LERNER

- Barney continues to put in a great amount of work at the club with his organisational skills. An indispensable club member who has played a big part in helping Saltaire to achieve over 100 runners on the books. During January Barney finished an excellent 5th in the Muddy Fools handicap race and also notched an impressive performance at the 3rd peco race which helped send the vets team storming to the top of the table.

HANNAH OLDROYD

- Hannah has started the year in the same rich vein of form as she ended 2012. During January Hannah was 1st lady finisher in 4 consecutive parkruns at 4 different locations with her final effort at Malahide (Ireland) knocking a massive 46 seconds off her all time PB which gave her 19.04. Hannah kept herself busy during the month as she also finished an excellent 3rd overall (1st in group E) in the Muddy Fools handicap. Hannah was also 1st lady Strider home (10th overall) in the race at Bramley Falls.

MICK CHAMBERS

- Mick's another member who has had to battle back from a serious injury last year. Not an easy feat in itself!! The clubs Vets captain has had a tough job rallying troops for the season but keeps plugging away with his great enthusiasm. Mick had an impressive run at the Giants Tooth fell race and also put in a great run at the Peco race which helped steer the Vets team to the summit of the 17 team strong division.

Please cast TWO votes (two different individuals!) for Januarys member of the month.

Peco league race 3 - Bramley Falls Woods

Will Kerr reports ...

Another fantastic turnout saw a record 27 members turn up at Bramley fall woods for the 3rd cross country race in the series. As previously mentioned on many occasions, the peco races are about getting as many members out as possible irrelevant of what position they might finish as its all about the team effort. ....and boy did the teams do good!!.

The ladies who once again were missing a couple of notable absentees finished a respectable 6th out of the 9 teams in the premier division which means that they lie 6th in the overall standings from the 3 races so far with Valley Striders and Kirkstall Harriers hanging onto 4th and 5th place (we'll have them in the next race!!). The ladies even managed to accumulate points for a 2nd team which shows we've got great depth in our squad!! The ladies vets meanwhile finished the day in 4th place out of 18 teams which puts them 6th overall in the season.

Well done ladies!!

10th Hanah Oldroyd
28th Jen Willingham
53rd Louise McGechaen
57th Tracy Foy
60th Helen Love
83rd Louise Higgins
94th Kirsty Holmes
123rd Michelle Eyres
144th Helen Pennington
146th Donna Line
162nd Lindsey Pearson

The mens team exceeded expectations and finished the day with their strongest result ever with only Valley Striders beating them in the premier division. This puts the mens team 3rd in the standings after 3 races. The mens 2nd team finished 2nd out of the 9 clubs who managed to create a team!! The mens vets once again had a storming result and won the 18 team table for the day!! This puts them joint top of the vets table over the course of the campaign. Watch out St Theresas!! (and they host the next race so may be down on numbers!!).

Well done you guys!!!

5th Simon Pass
10th Will Kerr
40th Andy Bedford
43rd Martin Fillingham
76th Jack Verity
78th Mick Chambers
91st Nick Trinder

158th Richard Stone
165th Barney Lerner
175th Harry McGill
200th Frank Beecroft
212th Pete Huby
230th Frank Masley

SO THEN, when all these results are taken into account and compared to last seasons results after the same stage guess what, Saltaire Striders are still leading the way to land the Colin Morath trophy for the most improved team!!! BRILLIANT!! WELL DONE TO ALL AND LETS KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK FOR THE FINAL TWO RACES...NEXT ONE IS ON THE 17TH FEB.

Coley Canter 7m trail race

Martin Love reports ... Shhhhhh! It's the Coley Canter.

The 7-mile off-road Coley Canter is a truly fantastic little race, if somewhat quirky. The most difficult thing about taking part is normally finding out when it is actually taking place, although this year it was uncharacteristically publicised, appearing as it did on the Calder Valley website. The race normally happens sometime between Christmas and New Year, but exact timings do vary from year to year.

The route takes in tracks, fields and some beautiful woodland between Shelf, Hipperholme and Norwood Green. Excellently marked out and marshalled, the going this year was 'a bit muddy', as expected after all the rain, but nothing above knee-deep! Runners also get to meet the friendliest farmer in Yorkshire (not!) - veterans of the 6th leg of the Calderdale Way Relay will know who I mean.

Just 66 turned out for the race, but this was a lot higher than the 37 in 2011 and at one point I was wondering if there were more marshals than runners. Talking to the organiser, Karl Gray, who also holds the course record with an incredible 42 minutes, I was told that the race isn't publicised because he wants to keep it within easily managable numbers. He certainly doesn't try to price runners out of taking part - the 50p per head (yes, 50p!!!!!) entry fee meant that the entire field only paid slightly more than a single runner in the Abbey Dash.

There are no prizes, which isn't something that would affect me anyway, but you do get to bring a fair bit of the course home with you so best not to run in any new gear you got for Christmas.

Definitely worth adding to the diary for next year - but don't tell anyone else!

Silsden Resolution 3m road race

Ali Nash reports ... A cheeky little 3 mile road race – the cheeky bit being the 500ft of ascent over the first 1½ miles, (into a bitter headwind).

In amongst the numerous thorns of Bingley Harriers, Wharfedale Harriers and Keighley and Craven AC, were the veritable roses of Ali Nash and Ian Jones representing t’striders, cheered on by Louise Higgins. In total 97 hardy souls assembled at the start line by ‘The Green’ in Silsden to begin the ascent of Bradley Road and Hole Lane. This was followed with a refreshing tailwind along Heights Lane before the tumultuous descent down Horn Lane and Bradley Road.

Despite a 4 and a half month injury layoff and norovirus over Christmas for Ali and a rotten cold for Ian, the striders came in a commendable 13th and 14th separated by just 13 seconds.

GEORGINA KATBORG

- George has been put forward once more for her fantastic enthusiasm and commitment to the club. During November George took part in her first ever 10k and set a fantastic benchmark time. George continues to help and encourage other members with her positivity.

SIMON PASS

- Simon has had a fantastic year and he helped himself to a new 10k PB at the Leeds Abbey dash in which he was first strider to cross the line. Simon then went on to notch up another race victory at the 1st Peco race of the season at Fitzwilliam park to help the mens team to an impressive 3rd place finish.

TRACY FOY

- Tracys only just joined the club but has immediately made a big impact by bagging two PBs during November. First up was the Bradford parkrun 5k, this was followed by a PB at the Abbey dash where she knocked 4 minutes off. The month was topped off with a fantastic debut race at the PECO's.

LOUISE HIGGINS

- Another nomination for Louise. Loiuse has shown great commitment to the club by regularly attending training not only at Nuffield but at Keighley track. All the hard work has paid off as shes been rewarded with a PB at Abbey dash as well as a strong race performance at the 1st PECO race.

INDIVIDUAL MEN

M60 - Harry McGill - 2nd overall (competed in 7 races)
Chris Reynier - 11th overall (4 races)

MENS TEAMS

Airedale Athletics - All to Count 11th (out of 31 teams); 1st 4 to Count 11th and Rest to Count 10th

Two teams competed in the Road Relay Races held at Saltaire on the 9th September - the competition was very strong coming from all over the Yorkshire County:
MENS TEAM M50 - 6th (out of 14 teams) - Mick Brearley (8th fastest lap 16:33); Mick Chambers and Jack Verity
WOMENS TEAM F45 - 5th (out of 5 teams) - Helen Love (8th fastest lap 21:19; Carole Raistrick and Maggie Davies.

By far the majority of Airedale Athletics runners came from Saltaire Striders and I believe the decision has been taken to compete in the Yorkshire Vets races next season under our own club banner - don't forget when you reach the grand old age of 35 you are a VET !

It was a very, very close vote between the 6 strong nominees and well done to Loiuse Higgins, Hannah Oldroyd, Michelle Eyres, Mick Brearley and Simon Frazer for there outstanding achievements in October but Jens hard work, guts, determination and ruthless marathon training paid off! September member of the Month

From the 12 nominations, the winner is ...

Dairine Nethercott

- Despite the horrible winds and nattering all the way round the Recar half marathon with Helen. Dairine still managed to knock a considerable chunk (10 mins) off her PB to complete it in just over 2hours.

Dairine was presented with the trophy by Will Kerr at the Monday training session from the Old Tramshed

Ladies Do

- Friday 7th December at the Old Glen House, Prod lane, Baildon on Friday 7th December.

The Old Glen House is the nice pub at the top of that nice steep climb that runs parallel to the Shipley Glen tramway and at the end of that other lovely long drag called West lane/ Lucy Hall drive in Baildon. We've run past it on many a Monday night!

Strider of the month September

Please cast your votes, 12 candidates to choose from please select 2.

Gavin Moses

- After a lot of hardwork Gavin completed his first ever half marathon in 1hr 57 minutes. He also needs to be rewarded for supporting Liverpool F.C.???

Demma Simpson-Nash

- Demma stuck like glue to Gavin to also complete her first ever half marathon at the Great North Run in the same time. All that training paid off.

James Rush

- James started the month with a great run at the LCWR to finish his leg 8th quickest with his partner Ian Jones. James also got a massive PB at the Great North Run. This was partly down to his 1st experience with Interval training in the proceeding weeks.

Hannah Oldroyd

- Hannahs been injured for the majority of the month but still managed to get a PB at the Great North Run H.M. in a time of 1hr 34.15. She then continued her form at the Rochdale 10k where she was first lady in a time of 42.07 (another PB).

Dairine Nethercott

- Despite the horrible winds and nattering all the way round the Recar half marathon with Helen. Dairine still managed to knock a considerable chunk (10 mins) off her PB to complete it in just over 2hours.

Helen Pennington

- Helen was just off her 10k PB at Wetherby in 50.29 and then followed this up with her first ever Half Marathon at Redcar...infact, it was the first time shes ever run this distance!

Georgina Katborg

- George has been showing great improvement since shes joined the club and during september she knocked 30 seconds off her 5k PB at the Bradford parkrun.

Bob Hudson

- Phantom Bob did his 1st ever marathon in Berlin and got round in an excellent 3hours and 47 minutes. If he trained he'd be dangerous!

Malcolm Foy

- Malcolm produced a 5k PB at the Bradford parkrun before completing his first half marathon in under 1hour 50 minutes at Redcar.

Andrew Bedford

- Andy started the month with a 2nd place finish on his leg of the LCWR with partner Will Kerr. During the month Andy also equalled his Bradford 5k parkrun PB while also winning the race. Andy also produced a great performance at the Horsforth 10k to finish 14th.

Harry McGill

- Harrys still going stronger than ever and producing great displays in every race he turns out in. During september Harry was the 2nd V65 at the Horsforth 10k.

Simon Pass

- Simon achieved his first proper victory in the Kirkstall 7 mile race. This was on the back of another solid performance where he finished 5th in the Yorkshireman Half marathon.

Burnley Fire Brigade 7

Saltaire Striders are certainly getting out and about these days, Berlin, Paris, Redcar and now Burnley!!. Simon Pass was a convincing winner by over 3 and half minutes (becoming a good habit winning races)

Simon Pass reports ...

I've never been to Burnley before. It has always had a bad press in my house seeing as my wife's family come from Blackburn. Thought I'd go and have a look for myself. Although this event is run as a charity event by Lancashire Fire and Rescue, I think it has in the past been a serious race, with previous winners running close to 5 minute miles on what is a tough course. I thought Will might be up for this being a firefighter, but he demurred, citing family reasons. I think you need to get your priorities right Mr Kerr, choosing family over running. Whatever next!

A beautiful autumn morning found me in Burnley in good time, but I couldn't find the firestation. I asked for help. A group of young ladies ummed and arred (is that right?)for a couple of minutes before admitting they had never been to Burnley before, and the old chap I asked next was simply glad of someone to talk to I think. Ten minutes later I was still lost. I began to get my head around missing the race, trying to put a positive spin on a morning drive to Burnley and back when I randomnly turned a corner and there it was.

Lots of Lancastrian running vest about: Clayton le Moors, Trawden, Accrington and Rossendale. The race has an old fashioned feel about it, but in a nice way. The firemen and their families run it. No goody bags but plenty of prizes at the end (including £50 cash to the winner). No road closures but with lots of burly firemen acting as marshalls and fire engines shadowing the race and blocking strategic junctions it felt pretty safe. Wives and children did thin sliced white bread sandwiches and tea in styrofoam cups at the finish. I chose the beef paste sandwiches over the fish paste and they really hit the spot. With the autumn chill in the air it took me back to my childhood in the seventies, a saturday afternoon at the cross country. Hilly course so no pbs, but spectacular views of the south pennines, Pendle Hill in particular.

A couple of celebs doing the presentations. Ted Robbins, the guvnor off the Slammer on CBBC (yes really!) giving out signed photocards. Got one for each of my kids and then one for the missus. It's her birthday coming up and I had been wondering what to get her as a main present. Problem solved. All in all an intersting morning out.

Paris Versailles Grand Classique – highly recommended!

Louise Higgins reports ...

30 September 2012: A cool, sunny Parisian morning (in stark contrast from the “British summer that never was”.) 21,000 fit (and not so fit) bodies at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. One “non-runner” among them -feeling good (despite the accidental beers on the Friday…), aiming to plod the 10 miles to Versailles in 100 minutes, secretly hoping that the weeks of hill reps, short runs, long runs, a Park Run PB the week before, would pay off and maybe, just maybe, lead to something a bit quicker.

A chipped, well organised start with approx. 200 runners setting off at a time at one minute intervals with plenty of room, running through the streets of Paris for a nice flat 5k to start with, prior to – well, we knew it was coming – the climb - 200m ascent over 1.5 km. Which actually wasn’t all that bad at all, all that hill training was worth it! The snake of runners then wound its way through lovely shaded, spacious, undulating woodland. At the 10k point came the sudden realisation that the non-runner was feeling surprisingly good and, after struggling for ages with some normally straightforward mental ‘rithmetic, worked out a 90 minute finish could be on the cards… the challenge was on, time for a concerted effort! A few water stops later saw the woodland turn into the town of Versailles, lined with wellwishers and eventually the avenue leading to the finish line on the way to the stunning Palais de Versailles - with one little Yorkshire lass thinking, “can I make it in 90 minutes? Don’t know – just run like the clappers!” Did she make it in time…?

Fastest male 47:01 (Ethiopia)
Fastest female 54:58 (Kenya)
Louise Higgins 88:26 (Saltaire Striders) Placed 10,690 out of 21,260, 929th female out of 4919.

A great experience, well organised, stunning scenery, I’d highly recommend it – any who fancies it next year, check out

Redcar half marathon

Malcolm Foy reports ...

This was my first half marathon. The roads were in good condition, the weather was cool and dry and the route was flat. Nothing was going to get in the way of my reaching the target I had set of a 1:50:00 time for a half marathon. Nothing, except the howling North Sea wind which was blowing at my side, at my back and in my face (with a helping of fine sand, too!). Oh, and two bouts of cramp, too. Ouch! Still, I hung on. I had to... there was a sizeable Striders presence at this race and I didn't want to let anyone down.

It was tough but, thanks to the generous encouragement of Frank, Dairine and Helen, I managed to get round. That I managed to hit my target is in no small measure due to the help given by Will in both the original training plan and in the exhortations over that last half mile when I was downcast and convinced I was going to blob. Thanks Will!

Helen Pennington reports ...

Five intrepid striders attempted the Redcar half marathon, only one of whom had even been there before (Malcolm, who grew up in Redcar). The mainly flat course took us north along the coast past the steelworks and back, followed by another out and back south along the main beach. It meant that Dairine and I had two opportunities to shriek "Go on Will/Frank/Malcolm!!!!" at our speedier team mates on the opposite side of the road. It was a nice race with strong sea breezes (sadly not the alcoholic variety) and good support from the crowd. Dairine smashed her PB by ten minutes, Malcolm (like me, another first timer) got back within an impressive 1 hour 50 and both Will and Frank put in their usual excellent performances. So all in all a successful day for the club and a highly recommended race.

Horsforth 10k

Almost a perfect morning for racing, all the climbing on this course is over in the first 3k then it's down hill for 3k, then 3k on the canal tow-path (thankfully the wind was behind us most of the way on here), before the last 1k run for the finish line. A good size field with numbers over 500 and entries on the morning accepted. Striders were lead home by Andy Bedford but where were all the ladies? Not a Pb course but a reasonable course considering how hilly the area is

Kirkstall Abbey 7m trail race

1st Simon Pass 37:58 - Congratulations to Simon on his first (of hopefully many) victory in a race

Simon Pass reports...

A couple of weeks before this race the organisers started putting up signs around the route. You know the sort of thing: warning walkers cyclists etc. of the forthcoming race. As the route is near my work I started passing these signs while running or cycling to and from the office. They seemed to be calling "Enter me, enter me!" but still feeling beat up from the Yorkshireman half I was quite happy with the prospect of a Sunday morning with Match of the Day, coffee and the Sunday papers.

As time passed and my body healed, however, the temptation to enter the race grew stronger. My mind turned from the football and coffee of the early part of the morning, to the ironing, vacuuming, and kids refusing to do their homework which would inevitably follow later in the Sunday morning. The idea of the race grew more attractive as a result. I sounded my wife out about our plans for the weekend and she mentioned some sort of craft workshop at Shipley community centre she might take the kids to but she didn't think I'd like. She doesn't always get things right my missus (she would say different) but 10 out of 10 here. I did however mumble something about how it sounded really good but then promptly started texting to see if anyone was up for a race.

Quentin was doing the Harewood 10k and Colin (Walker) reckoned Harewood was better than the Kirkstall 7. "something for everyone" in his words. Two hours later he texted me saying he'd entered the Kirkstall 7!? I promptly stuck my entry in. I decided to reccy the route and set up an early morning start with Colin on the Friday before the race. He rang Thursday night to blob, and while maybe secretly pleased I didn't have to be in Rodley for 7.30 I didn't let him know that, doing my best to sound slightly hurt that he'd let me down.

I went out by myself from work Friday lunchtime for the reccy and promptly got lost on the streets of lower Horsforth and was forced to ring Colin. "Colin, you know when you are at this point, which way etc." For the first two phone calls he was happy to help but by phone call 4 my goodwill was used up. "Turn right on the canal and head towards Rodley" he said " and you can't get lost on that bit so there's no need to ring me, and if you do I'm not answering!". Having completed the reecy, however, I thought it was a good run. Some road, riverbank, meadows, canal towpath, some flat and some hills. "Something for everyone" using Colin's words.

Race day saw me doing my bit for global warming, driving my nine seat minibus to the start as the sole passenger. A fine day and a lovely setting at Kirkstall Abbey. There was a fun run on and a good family atmosphere. Lots of marshalls about too. There seemed to be a good turn out and I was pleased for the organisers as judging from a couple of conversations between some of them I overheard they seemed as though they had been worried about the numbers. We had use of the Abbey facilities and a nice location for a warm up with Colin. I was going to see if he fancied running it alongside me but he said he had a bit of a bug and I should run my own race.

We lined up promptly for the start at 10am. There was a Kirkstall member on the front line in a full monks garb and I was wondering when he going to move out of the way. Turns out he ran the whole race in the outfit and I think he finished about 20th so fair play to the lad! Not a lot to say about the race other than I managed not to get lost (and won it!). A water station at the Railway pub half way and lots of marshalls helped.

We adjourned to the old Post mans social club in Kirkstall after the race, somewhere I had never been before. A decent spread was set out and I enjoyed a couple of nice ham butties and a good cup of tea. A well organised, friendly event. A good route to enjoy and in my view a decent morning out at a nice local event. Didn't get out of the ironing mind!

I did a less than stunning 2 hours 43 mins and 57 secs over the 14.1 mile course. It was tough and felt longer than I'd anticipated. Still, the course was beautiful and it was my last training run before my first half marathon "proper" next weekend.

Yorkshireman off-road marathon, Haworth

Pete Huby reports ...

I’ll start this report as all runners of my standing start all their races... with the excuses. It’s an unwritten rule but you’ll hear it at every race. This way if you have a bad run you can say well I told you so and if it’s a good run you are a hero for putting up with the ailments...

Excuse 1. I started training for this marathon months before and it was all going well, I was getting fitter, faster and thinner. Then 2 weeks before I slipped on a training run and strained my hamstring. After much deliberation over should I run, should I drop to the half marathon I decided I’d risk it and do the full marathon.
Excuse 2. With the summer we’ve had it’s been excellent off road running conditions, boggy, muddy, slippy and wet. Ultimately all my long runs have taken place on cold wet days with underfoot conditions to suit, I’ve loved it. But then the weeks before the race have been dry and getting hotter by the day with the hottest day being race day. I don’t do heat and wilt like a flower out of water. Excuses over.

Race day arrived, the weather was scorching, the sunshine for the whole of August came out on this day!! I got to Haworth by 8:30 to ensure a parking slot (avoid the clampers). Richard Stone was already there, he’d decided to enter and plod round with me as I knew the route. The organisers always do an excellent job at this event with pre race tea and toast and other snacks, post race meals, and snacks at all the main check points to keep you going.

The race kicks off at 10:00 with the half marathon starting at 10:30. We drifted to the start on the cobbled main street. The start is called and we’re off. Within 300 yards we turn the corner and hit the first climb of the day, already the tail enders were walking. We worked our way up to the tops of Haworth and on to the moors. One unfortunate runner was knocked over by a couple of dogs and looked like he’d have to retire within the first mile. 2 miles in and we meet my nemesis, a short sharp climb over very rocky ground, I’ve been up this lots of times but have never managed to run it so I dropped to as brisk a walk as I could muster.

At 3 miles we hit a nice long reasonably flat section with fantastic views for miles around. The heat was draining me but Richard was great and kept me going. 6 miles in and more hills to climb up to the wind farm on Ovenden Moor, I was looking forward to the slight decline and rough tracks so I could pick up some time. As we approached the 8 mile checkpoint the leaders of the half marathon started going past. Then I hear “well done Pete” as Simon Pass went by currently in 3/4th place in the half and looking as if he was on a steady jog!! Water bottle replenished and biscuits/cake devoured it was off over Rocking Stone flats. There are some horrible bogs over this section and you keep hearing screeches as people sink to their knees in mud. This section finishes with a nice downhill so I was able to catch back up with Richard.

Onwards and upwards once again heading towards a house on the sky line along the Calderdale way route, yet again I was down to snail’s pace. I encouraged Richard to leave me as I was holding him back and eventually he went disappearing over the horizon.

My tardis of a bum bag with it’s supply of everything came into it’s own. My hamstring was starting to tighten so out came the emergency “Deep Heat” and it just eased things enough to keep going. As we approached 13 miles at Ogden reservoir I was out of water and fading fast. A very nice lady in the community centre at the reservoir kindly filled my water bottle and allowed me to soak my bandana in icy cold water for mopping my face. A few more miles on and another check point, excellent more water, biscuits, cake and cheese sandwiches revived me and got me going again. There’s a good long flat section now along the valley bottom with a lovely icy cold stream running along it. At several stages I just stopped and stood in the stream to cool my feet and re-soak my bandana. Once again my pace picked up a bit and I latched on to another runner and shared a bit of banter. It’s amazing how a quick chat can make you forget your aches and pains for a while.

Hewenden viaduct was quickly upon us, 18 miles done. It’s only 2 miles to my house from here so I had to quickly dismiss the idea of quitting. A short section through a wooded area finally gave a brief break from the sun although I slipped on a muddy slope and felt the hamstring twinge. Good old deep heat to the rescue again. Another stream more standing and soaking, I’m sure I saw steam coming from my feet!! Dolphin Lane, sounds very quaint doesn’t it? But no, it’s a long, narrow, boggy, uphill track that saps the calfs. The putrid mud in my shoes had worked itself through and caused a blister that then decided to burst. In to the bumbag again for emergency plasters but forgot I’d given the plasters away to other runners earlier. Luckily a very nice fellow runner came to my rescue with some tape.

The climb on to Harden Moor seemed harder than usual but a very brief sprinkle of rain was like heaven, unfortunately it didn’t last and the cooking sun returned. It wasn’t long before my watch reported 20 miles down, it started to feel like a home stretch. Another check point more food and water and off at a brisk walk while still eating so I didn’t lose too much time. Heading down to Barcroft a kindly gentleman was laying cups of ice cold water out on his garden wall as he’d seen the runners passing and it was hot. Ice cold water instead of tepid water was like heaven to the lips. The final check point, I would have got excited at this stage apart from knowing that there’s still 2 more big hills to climb. I strode out up the first hill not having the strength to run. I was just looking forward to the other side of the moor and the final descent to Haworth.

The last hill to the finish, I tried to blag a free ice cream from the van at the bottom of the hill but no joy there. Half way up and there’s a pub on the road side a chap passes over some iced orange juice and it went down a treat. Up to the main road and earlier finishers are all cheering us on then just as your legs go to jelly it’s down some steps to the finish.

A great technical tshirt and plenty of food to finish the day 5:29:23 it’s not the fastest time but I survived. Thanks to all the marshalls and organisers for a great race. Thanks to Richard Stone for dragging me round the start, and the unknown runners who helped physically and mentally throughout the race. Thanks to my wife for putting up with me whilst training and never being home.

Would I do it again? Yes, but don’t tell my wife

Wetherby run 10k

Helen Pennington reports ...

The Wetherby 10k lives up to its billing as "a cracking little Yorkshire run". With only 1,000 runners it's certainly little and we were reminded that we were in Yorkshire when the race commentator told us all to applaud ourselves for being 'real Yorkshire heroes' before the gun went off. Mark, Gary and I (a geordie, a Wiganer and a scouser respectively) felt a bit like frauds but joined in anyway. The race is unusual in starting at 2pm, rather than early in the morning, so it feels very civilised. It's run on a mixture of roads, trails by the side of fields, and cycle paths. It's mostly quite flat but you have to cross the A1 three times, and you know about it by the third time!

The rural route is very pretty although on a warm day, like the day we ran it, you feel like you're doing a wuss's version of the marathon des sables because there's so much dust from the paths! Despite that, it's recommended.

We entered a mens V50 team and a ladies FV45 team in the relays. Mick Brearley ran a superb 1st leg for the men to run the 8th fastest V50 time of the day, he was followed up by Mick Chambers and Jack Verity to finish 6th of 14 teams and only 5 seconds down on the 4th team.

The ladies were represented by Carol Raistrick, Maggies Davies and Helen Love (8th fastest)

No watch race - Baildon

The courses were a bit longer than usual this year with 6.79 miles for the long run and 5.85 miles for the short run with tough finishes up Baildon Road from the Junction Pub on the long run and a long drag up West Lane from the Glen for the short run

Will Kerr and Andy Bedford were 1st and 2nd across the line in the long run in 45:16 and 45:18 with James Rush 4th in 48:01

In the shorter run Simon Pass was a comfortable winner in 39:35 and also took 3rd place in the competition to predict your finishing time just 25 seconds out. Gary and Helen Pennington are clearly a lot better runners than they give themselves credit for, finishing 15:48 and 11:54 quicker than their predicted times. Gary taking the wooden spoon for worst estimate!

Leeds Country Way relay

On a fine day for running, if a little on the warm side later in the day, we had 2 Airedale Athletics teams and a Salatire Striders team competing in the 64 mile relay around Leeds. The race is split into 6 stages and each stage is run by a pair of runners who have to finish together (and preferably stay together throughout the run). Will Kerr did a superb job of pairing up people and drafting in new recruits at the last minute.

After Leg 1 the Airedale A team was in 5th place, the B team 14th and the Striders team 25th. On Leg 2 Ian Jones and James Rush had a storming run for the Striders with 8th fastest time of the day on that leg. Leg 3 saw Mick Brearley partnered up with Pete Hughes from Queensbury and they finsihed 3rd fastest on the leg moving the Airedale A team up to 4th position (not bad for a pair of over 50s)

Simon Pass and Quentin Lewis were just 2 seconds off the fastest time on leg 4 moving the Airedale team up 2 places into 2nd place. On Leg 5 Jack Verity partnered last minute stand in Martin Firth and ran 3rd fastest on the leg but were passed by the Valley Striders pair running the fastest leg - but still not bad for another pair of over 50s. On leg 6 Will Kerr and Andy Bedford set off in hot pursuit and managed to overall Valley Striders to finish in 2nd place and 2nd fastest pair on their leg.

Bradford Park Run 5k 28th July

Ali Nash reports ...

It’s just the Parkrun isn’t it? With 16 Saltaire Striders on the start line it was looking more like a club meet! I had a plan to get nearer that sub 20 minute marker this week,....run my own race, it was even written on my hand, along with time splits (OCD is catching, thanks Will...)

The race was on! As per usual ‘that Kerr’ left us for dead sprinting off gazelle-like past Cartwright Hall. Hannah, Ali, Steph and Simon were running for the minor positions, looking like the ‘anthill mob’ jostling in a pack for the first couple of laps, Ian was pacing at 25:30 dressed as a very passable Bradley Wiggins complete with helmet, glasses and yellow jacket, Pete was rattling round for his first time at the Parkrun having just completed a 6 mile warm up from Guiseley....(and then a 6 mile back...) Not forgetting Helen L and Louise Higgins on marshalling duty and providing encouragement for the Striders possee. Will came out clear winner, with a further 4 Striders in the top 20 of 154 runners, 7PB’s achieved as well. Superb turnout!

1 Will Kerr 17:09 PB
13 Ali Nash 20:30 PB
15 Steph Wilson 21:02 PB
16 Simon Frazer 21:05 PB
20 Hannah Oldroyd 21:38

80 Chris Reynier 26:40

146 Jill Metcalfe 38:54

If you haven't come across the park run yet, they are free 5k runs every Saturday morning at 9:00. They take place all over the country but your local race is held over 3 laps round a slightly hilly course in Lister Park. You need to register beforehand and print off a bar code to get yourself included in the results.

Idle Trail race

Idle Trail race - Simon Pass reports...

A windy and cloudy day for my first running of the Idle Trail Race. Good to see a few Striders out. Nice to see John H on his way back from a bad injury. While not running good of him to turn out in support. Steph was here too looking to add to her string of recent good performances. Said hello to Donna as well (results say Judith so am presuming they swapped?). We were also treated to that rare thing of our club captain the esteemed Mr Kerr turning out in an open multi terrain race, especially after his last appearance in the Eldwick gala fell (yes: Fell!) race. What have you been drinking Will?

Setting off around the field a couple of apparently unattached runners saw fit to lead out Quentin but were soon put in their place. Onto the canal and with a tail wind Quentin set a blistering pace. I sat in in second and had the first three miles at 5.19, 5.27 and 5.40 (the last with the climb to the chemical works). Tucked in behind the leader I had a grandstand view of him doing battle with various Jack Russells and Labradors and had a good chuckle to myself knowing what a lover he is of our canine friends. I could only imagine the cursings being made under his breath. Also of some amusement were the faces of the various dog walkers out for a pleasant Sunday morning stroll along the canal only for them to spot 200 plus runners bearing down on them. Dogs were quickly grabbed and leads attached!

Past the chemical works I had a sneaky look over my shoulder and saw Colin Walker and Will (returning to form) in hot pursuit. Over the stile and through the bone hard farmers field, glad of the decision to wear road shoes although struggling with the rutted path. Pulling up Woodlands Drive Quentin now had 80 yards on me and looked good for the win.The race for the minor positions still on with myself in the box seat. Up the steps and through the twists and turns before back onto Woodlands Drive and the push for home, everyone now fully committed.

A left through the snicket to the stile and: hold on, a big meadow, Quentin out of sight, and no idea which way to go. I tried right to be shouted at from behind "Left, Left!". With a loss of momentum, coupled with (and sorry to use a technical term here) the fact that I descend "like a girl" (sorry ladies) my pursuers were upon me. Dishearted by this turn of events the fight went out of me temporarily, and fourth it was to be. I eased up and was treated to a grandstand view firstly of Quentin easing down to take a comfortable victory so congratulations to him, and secondly of an epic tussle for second with Will using his legendary sprinting prowess to come past Colin for a great second place. Steph was third lady so well done there. Donna got herself a cool bag as a spot prize so seemingly no-one went home empty handed. Also present was keen new member Vicki along with her Idle AC member husband and 2 childern who in addition to cheering her on put in a stint as marshalls. A healthy goody bag too with banana and water. Nice friendly event and well organised I would certainly recommend!

June Strider of the month

The winner of the June Strider of the month award is ...

Simon Pass

- Simon was nominated for his brilliant race performances which included a 1st place finish on leg 1 of the BMWR with Quentin, 1st V40 at the Ilkley Trial race, 3rd OPEN (2nd V40) at the Apperley Bridge Canter and a brilliant 2nd at the Humber Bridge half marathon which gave him a PB.

Washburn Valley Relay - Swinsty

Saltaire Striders had 5 teams taking part in this 3 leg relay based on the Swinsty and Fewston reservoirs. A fascinating race developed on what turned out to be a dry night albeit with slippery underfoot conditions. Recent recruit Andy Bedford gave the team a great start with 2nd place after the first leg. June Member of the month Simon Pass ran the 2nd fastest leg on leg 2 but slipped 1 place being passed by Otleys Ian Fisher. On the final leg Will Kerr set off in hot pursuit, 44 seconds down on the leaders, and failed to catch them by just 6 seconds (running the fastest lap for leg 3), but a great result nevertheless finishing 1:17 in front of 3rd placed Haroogate.

2nd Saltaire Titans (Andy Bedford 19:13, Simon Pass 22:51, Will Kerr 18:16)

Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10k

Helen Pennington reports ...

I approached the Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10k, on 8 July, with a sophisticated race strategy. It was as follows: 1. Don't fall over, 2. Don't get lapped by a bloke dressed up as a gingerbread biscuit (this happened to one of my friends at a race last year, and she still hasn't got over the trauma). To this I should have added 3. Get to Millennium Square early so as not to start the race at the back of a 10,000 strong crowd. The wisdom of hindsight, eh?

Our group of five found ourselves behind the Elvis impersonators, which combined with the sheer number of people and the narrow streets at the start meant that we had to walk for the first couple of minutes then spent the first 4k dodging around Fred & Wilma Flintstone and two blokes running inside a paddling pool. It soon became apparent that there would be no PBs for us, so I just concentrated on enjoying the race.

The route was nice. There was an initial lap around the city centre and under the station, followed by an 'out and back' along Meanwood road with a turn at the 6k point. There was plenty of support along this part of the route, and two water stations. There were a couple of inclines, but nothing to trouble anybody who runs in the Aire valley. The race ended with a final lap down Briggate and then back up Albion Street to the Headrow, with a lovely downward slope towards the finish. The route made a nice change from pounding along dual carriageways, which seems to be the pattern for most city 10ks.

In summary, it's a fun race but if you want to do a fast time, like Ian's majestic 41.16, get there early and start at the front!

Olympic Torch relay Ilkley

Some of us joined up with Baildon runners to have a run over the moor to Ilkley to see the Olympic torch come through. On arriving Ilkley was heaving but we headed out from the centre a little (suprisingly towards the Ilkley Vaults pub!) and found space on the roadside to get a good view. After the torch flashed past we retired to the aforementioned Ilkley Vaults for a social drink. One of the torch bearers arrived in the beer garden complete with torch and Saltaire Striders were able to get up close with the torch!

Humber Bridge half marathon

2nd Simon Pass 75:49 (1st V40)

Simon Pass reports...

After a few off road runs recently fancied getting the old road shoes out again. Picked this race a bit last minute. Bit further than I wanted to travel but I suppose if your are going on the M62 7am on a Sunday is the time to do it. After entering I had a bit of a read up about the race. Reports said that the parking was difficult. Was busy getting in although to be fair it wasn't the organisers fault. You have 3 or 4 big car parks all off a small service road off a roundabout. And I had a cunning plan for getting away. Try and finish fairly high up and then quickly make my excuses and get off!.

Secondly the course was supposed to be fairly tough. To be fair it probably was. You have a good half mile pull each way up to the mid point of the bridge with a pretty strong wind coming across you. There are also a good couple of hills on the course at miles 4 and 9. The latter they call Cardiac Hill and is good mile long. But if you do most of your running round our neck of the woods it wasn't anything you weren't used to. As to the race itself, the organisers had obviously put in tonnes of effort. There were drinks stations everywhere, loads of marshalls and police. The roads were closed for the most part. Lots of locals out as well so lots of noisy support. Added to that you got to run over the Humber Bridge twice toll free!

As to my performance, after spending the last couple of months half killing myself to try and keep up with Quentin over hill and dale this actually felt pretty reasonable. Only downside was running the race pretty much on my own, which led to a couple of those slightly surreal moments when you run through a busy area with loads of people chearing you on and then turn down a country lane and there is nothing and nobody there. All in all a really enjoyable morning out. Parking plan worked a treat and home for luchtime!

Trail half marathon Wales

13th Jack Verity 1:46:30 (2nd V50)

This was the first running of this event at the mountain biking centre in the Coed Y Brenin forest in Snowdonia. Travelling over the M62 on Friday evening was horrendous with a river running down the motorway and the wipers going as fast as they could. The morning of the race was quite a pleasant morning, not too hot and no rain, but unfortunately lots of midges. The event included a full marathon starting at 9:00 and a half marathon at 9:30 (next year they are also planning on including a 10k)

The original plan was for the full and half marathons to share the first 3 miles and then go their separate ways but after all the rain on Thursday and Friday the marathon course was too waterlogged and the organisers had to quickly re-think the route. The race started on wide open forest tracks then went off onto some grassy single tracks with some good descents and a couple of tough climbs (the sting in the tail coming at 12 miles). With the change of course it meant that the leading half marathon runners were catching the slower marathon runners from about 7 miles which made it quite difficult passing on some 'technical' single tracks which meant marathon runners were almost getting knocked off the track. One critisism was that there were no mile markers and a few half runners have commented that they clocked it at 14 miles.

Overall an enjoyable event and I'm sure they'll learn from a few teething problems. Would definitely go back and do it again (perhaps a club trip for the future?)

St. Ives Riding for the Disabled 5m Trail race

A lovely summers night for this low key trail race (probably even more low key because of a certain football match taking place) organised by Bingley's Mary Green. Some tricky narrow paths early on with a few short sharp descents but then some good stretches of open running with steady climbs. An ideal race to try if you haven't done much off-road running before and want to give it a try. Even managed to get home for the second half of the match.

Bradford Millennium Way relay

Following the wet weather of the previous week, conditions underfoot were wet and records were not expected. Quentin Lewis and Simon Pass of Airedale Athletics led home the first leg runners.

Leg 2 record holders Ian Holmes and Andy Peace set off in hot pursuit on leg 2 and quickly turned a 2 minute deficit into an 8 minute advantage running the leg over 8 minutes quicker than their nearest challengers.

Not to be outdone Bingley leg 3 runners, Jamie Robinson and Steve Bailey romped round their leg in a surprising new leg record, knocking almost a minute off the previous record.

With a commanding lead of nearly 17 minutes at the end of leg 3 Bingley were never going to be caught and Leg 4 and Leg 5 pairings of Andrew Jebb and Andy Brown and Lee Athersmith and Stephen Broadbent extended the lead to 19 minutes and then an impressive 38 minutes at the finish line.

In 4th place overall, Accrington Road Runners finished triumphant in the vets category and in 8th place Stainland Lions took the mixed prize.

Keighley ladies finished with a 6 minute advantage over Wharfedale ladies to take the ladies team prize. With 50 teams completing the course.

Boston Marathon

With temperatures in the high eighties from the start, resulting in the slowest times since 1985, and following a chest infection requiring antibiotics, Richard Stone finished in 4:35:57 an hour down on his Berlin time from last year. But at least you stuck to the task and finshed in gruelling conditions. Well done Richard.

Peco League race 5 - Otley Chevin

Congratulations to the ladies team on their promotion to the Premier division! This has been a fantastic campaign which went down to the last race of the season at Otley Chevin on Sunday. They finished 2nd on the day however this was enough to ensure we went up as runners up to Wetherby. In fact, our countback score during the season looks like its good enough for the ladies to be mixing it up with the top dogs in the top division next season!

Thanks must go to our friendly neighbours Skyrac who provided us with Emma (who completed every race despite having to hobble along in the final race!) and Becca (who gave us a boost in the final two races). Thanks also for the fan club they brought along! These two ladies joined forces with the other 12 Saltaire Striders who all played there part during the season: WELL DONE TO ALL!

Steph Wilson, Jen Willingham, Helen Love, Paula Cutter, Louise Higgins, Helen Pennington, Michelle Eyres, Lindsey Pearson, Catherine Smith, Catherine Greenhalgh, Donna Line and last but not least Kath Stone who competed in her first ever cross-country race.

The men managed a comfortable mid-table position in their 1st season in the top flight despite a number of absentees during the season. This certainly bodes well for future campaigns to improve on our 5th place. Especially if we can all peak for the start of the season rather than the end! The Mens vets finished the season in 3rd (out of 17 teams) and actually won the final race on Sunday! Well done to all 25 Saltaire men who raced at some point during the season:

Jack Verity, Mick Chambers, Mick Brearley, Jon Dawson, Simon Pass, Harry McGill, Ian Jones, Barney Lerner, Frank Beecroft, Richard Stone, Simon Frazer, Alex lloyd, Dave Armstrong, Liam Verity, Greg Collett, Terry Williams, Peter McClory, Mick Jones, Tim Bellwood, Chris Upton, Mike Moss, Frank Masley, Gary McKee and Peter Huby.

At the end of the series Mick Chambers won the V55 category, Jack Verity finished 3rd in the V50, Harry McGill and Barney Lewrner were 4th and 5th respectively in the V60 and Will Kerr 5th in the Male open category

Peco League race 4 - Golden Acre park, Leeds

A fantastic result from the record 8 ladies who turned out who managed to finish 2nd on the day (only 2 points behind Ilkley). This however still puts them in a great position to get promoted. With just one race to go on the 11th March they proudly sit 2nd in the table on goal difference!! If they beat Airecentre in the final race then their promotion is all but guaranteed...theres even an outside chance they could go up as champions! Despite a weakened team from the men and only a disappointing 10 members turning up, the team still managed to finish a creditable 6th on the day and a good turn out in the final race should safely see the team withold there place in the premier division. Meanwhile, in the mens vets league we remain in an excellent 3rd place. WELL DONE TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED.

After 4 of the 5 races Mick Chambers is leading the V55 category, Jack Verity is 2nd in the V50, Will Kerr 3rd in the Male open and Harry McGill and Barney Lerner 4th and 5th in the V60 category

Will Kerr was 3rd across the line in the long run (6.22 miles) with Keith Jump 2nd on the shorter (4.43 miles) route. Martin Love was best Strider at predicting his time finishing 30 seconds slower than predicted (although I'm not sure finishing slower than predicted is such a good sign???).

Washburn Valley Relay

Saltaire Striders had 3 teams entered for this popular invitation relay from Swinsty Reservoir. Airedale Athletics missing Will Kerr from last years winning line up failed to defend their title being beaten into second place by a strong Otley team with a resurgent Ian Fisher doing the damage on leg 2, after Quentin had given Airedale the lead at the end of leg 1.

On Leg 1 for the striders were Martin Love, Michelle Eyres and Lindsey Pearson. On Leg 2 Simon Pass pulled the vets team up 17 places into 13th and Steph Wilson moved the ladies team up 9 places, Barney Lerner running leg 2 for the mixed team.

On leg 3 Jack Verity moved the vets team up a further 2 places to finish a creditable 11th with Helen Love and Donna Line completing the ladies and mixed teams.
